We especialise in climate change, biodiversity, and remote sensing and here we propose a comprehensive global assessment aimed at unraveling the potential of natural forest functional diversity. Natural forests play a crucial role in maintaining ecosystem health, supporting biodiversity, and regulating climate patterns. However, the functional diversity within these ecosystems remains poorly understood on a global scale. This proposed research seeks to employ advanced remote sensing technologies and analytical tools to assess the functional diversity potential of natural forests worldwide. By integrating satellite imagery, LiDAR data, and ground-based observations, we aim to develop a nuanced understanding of the intricate relationships between different species, their functional roles, and the impact of environmental variables on these dynamics.
The outcomes of this research will contribute significantly to our knowledge of natural forest ecosystems, enabling evidence-based conservation strategies and sustainable management practices. By conducting a comprehensive global assessment, we aim to identify hotspots of functional diversity, understand the factors influencing these patterns, and evaluate the potential impacts of climate change on natural forest functionality. Furthermore, the project will provide valuable insights for policymakers, conservationists, and land managers, aiding in the development of targeted interventions to preserve and enhance the functional diversity of natural forests. This research aligns with my expertise in climate change, biodiversity, and remote sensing, and I am confident that the findings will contribute to the broader scientific community’s understanding of the intricate relationships within natural ecosystems.
